What to Avoid When Hiking

Hiking is a great way to stay healthy while exploring the outdoors. However, it can be dangerous if you’re not careful. We go over what types of things to avoid when hiking in this blog post so that you don’t get hurt!

Don’t forget to wear the proper footwear. Your boots should be sturdy and supportive enough for a day on your feet, yet comfortable as well. Don’t go cheap! Also, make sure that there is good tread left on them so you don’t slip when out hiking in the hills or with loose rocks beneath your feet. You can avoid blisters and other foot pain by wearing wool socks that wick away moisture, instead of cotton.

Try to avoid hiking when it’s raining or just after a rainfall. The ground can be slippery which makes taking care not to fall very difficult! If you must hike during wet weather, make sure your boots are waterproofed for extra protection on the trails.

Another thing to avoid is getting lost! Always bring a map and compass with you, or better yet, use a GPS device. And make sure someone knows where you’re going and when you plan on coming back. If something does happen and you find yourself lost, stay put until help arrives. Wandering around in the wilderness can only make things worse.

Last but not least, be aware of your surroundings and the wildlife you may encounter. Bears, mountain lions, and other animals can be very dangerous if encountered unexpectedly. Make noise when hiking so that any wild animals will know you’re there and hopefully stay away from you. Also avoid leaving food out in the open, as this will only attract the wildlife to your campsite.

By following these tips, you can avoid any dangerous situations while hiking and have a safe and enjoyable adventure!
